A 24-year-old New Jersey woman will be extradited to DuPage County on a drug-induced homicide charge after she allegedly mailed heroin to her friend, who overdosed as a result.

Amanda Guarneri was charged with one count of drug-induced homicide and one count of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, according to a statement from the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office.

Guarneri mailed heroin laced with fentanyl to her friend, 26-year-old Dane Carver, also of New Jersey, while he was staying at an Extended Stay hotel in west suburban Darien for work, prosecutors said. When Carver did not show up to work on Aug. 8, co-workers asked hotel staff to search his room.

When staff entered the room, they found him unresponsive and alerted authorities, prosecutors said. A police investigation led to Guarneri. She is being held at the Suffolk County Jail in New York awaiting extradition, prosecutors said.

“Within the past 24 hours, my office has filed drug-induced homicide charges against three individuals allegedly responsible for two deaths,” state’s attorney Robert Berlin said in the statement. “If that isn’t an epidemic, I don’t know what is.”
