The roommate of a man killed in west suburban Naperville in January 2014 was found guilty of second degree murder Wednesday in DuPage County.
Grant Muren, 24, was found guilty of killing 25-year-old Charles Clark of Vail Court, Naperville, according to a statement from the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office. He was convicted of second-degree murder, aggravated arson and residential arson.
On Jan. 22, 2014, Naperville police responded to a call at Clark’s home, smelled natural gas and found his body in a bedroom, prosecutors said. Clark and Muren were in the home together earlier in the day when they got into a fight and Muren hit Clark in the head with a small table and strangled him.
Muren then turned on the gas oven and left the door open before he put his rental agreement papers in a toaster oven and turned it on, prosecutors said. Muren gathered his belongings and took off. He was taken into custody the next day when he was stopped for a traffic violation.
Muren is next scheduled to appear in the court Oct. 21, prosecutors said. He faces up to 30 years in prison.
